Where to Use Fast Edge® Roll Instead of Paper Tape

Trim-Tex’s latest innovation, Fast Edge® Roll, was designed to tackle just about any angle, anywhere — sharp or obtuse, inside or outside. But, obviously, like any other rolled corner bead, 99% of drywall finishers are going to use it to complement their other accessories, like their 90-degree corner beads and paper tape, not replace all of them. We’ve heard the question from many of our social media followers: why would I spend money on your new rolled corner bead when I can get hundreds of feet of cheap paper tape? So, let’s dig in! Here’s when and where to use Fast Edge Roll instead of paper tape.

Where to Use Paper Tape

Paper tape is obviously a mainstay for drywall finishers for good reasons. It’s flexible, it’s got a ton of uses and you can spend a small amount of money to get hundreds of feet of it. Especially if you’re on a job with thousands of square feet to finish, paper tape (or mesh tape, if that’s your style) is never going to go out of style.

Paper tape, obviously, will go on any seams and butt joints between sheets of drywall, as well as nearly all 90-degree inside corners. (Although, for high-traffic areas, we may recommend you opt for an inside corner bead instead for extra protection.) The thinness of the tape makes it easier to get a flat finish, and using a tool like an inside corner trowel makes it even easier, even if it won’t add much in the way of defense.

It's when we get into off-angle inside corners that we start to see big problems with paper tape…

Where to Use Fast Edge Roll

We would highly recommend choosing Fast Edge Roll over paper tape for any off-angle inside corner — drywall finishers especially love to use this bead on those long runs like the kinds you’d find on vaulted and cathedral ceilings. Why? Even an expert is going to have a very tough time forming straight lines with paper tape on off-angles.

Paper tape is an okay choice when an angle is sharp and all you need to do is conform to the hung drywall. But when the finish is what’s dictating the look of the angle, the way it does on an off-angle run, paper tape is too flimsy and too shapeless. And when the light hits these areas, even an untrained eye will be able to see when your lines aren’t straight. Just take a look at the photo below, where a pro finisher installed Fast Edge Roll side-by-side with paper tape on an off-angle; see how the finished paper tape wobbles and waves while the rolled bead stays level?

Fast Edge Roll v Paper Tape Finished

This is why Fast Edge Roll is manufactured with a dotted line running along the length of it — you’ll easily be able to tell if your lines are straight, and can make adjustments before mudding its paper legs into place. We made this bead so that it’s flexible enough to fit whatever off-angle you’re working with, but rigid enough that it won’t keep falling and flattening and folding out of shape the way paper tape (and, frankly, other brands of rolled corner beads) would. Plus, the faster finish helps meet tight deadlines.

Here are some other situations where to use Fast Edge Roll instead of paper tape:

  • Crooked or uneven framing. Paper tape gives you very little leeway when it comes to adjusting for less-than-perfect. Fast Edge Roll allows you to pinch and push it into place to form perfectly straight lines, even when the underlying drywall is anything but. For really rough framing, go for the largest size we got: the extra-wide 4.5” Fast Edge Roll.
  • Unwanted drywall voids and gaps. The thicker, more protective Fast Edge Roll can bridge gaps and cover drywall voids. Paper tape cannot.
  • Hold back unsightly cracks. Since Fast Edge Roll is more durable and covers more surface area, you can prevent cracking along your inside corners for longer than you would paper tape.
