In the world of drywall finishing, you’ll hear all sorts of opinions about sanding: use this tool and not that one, use this grit here but that grit there, and so on and so on. The truth is, there’s no single, 100% correct tool for sanding drywall. It’s all about matching the right tool for the right job, and finding the best fit for each finisher. Maybe you’ll find out you like a more rigid sanding sponge over a squishier one; maybe you’ll find you like a square pole sander over a round one. Drywall Sanding Blocks and Sponges

Sanding blocks or sponges fit in your hand, which gives their users ultimate control over their sanding work. The most basic of these are just basically rectangular little bricks, but professional drywall finishers usually prefer their sanding blocks to come with tapered and/or rounded edges to give them more control over every little nook and cranny of their drywall. Sanding blocks don’t last forever, but given that they’re also the most affordable option here, many finishers will buy large quantities of these blocks to tackle a large project.

When to choose drywall sanding blocks

Sanding blocks are for corner sanding and fine detail work — you usually won’t see someone using a block on a large, open wall space. Small repairs, touch-ups and risky areas are also perfect fits for sanding blocks. Also, if you’re using a block with a tapered edge (see our next subsection), it’s perfect for small, hard-to-reach areas, like the inner surfaces of a reveal detail.

When to choose rectangular drywall pole sanders

Where sanding blocks are for smaller details, pole sanders are for large ones: use these for those long joints and seams running along walls and ceilings. The pole obviously also gives you extra reach for hard-to-reach areas.
