These Beads Perfected a Modern Kitchen Makeover

Once drywall is up in a new or renovated space, it almost starts looking like a complete room — but there are still so many choices left to make that will define its final look. This is where the choice of corner beads and other drywall finishing accessories becomes so important. And, as the crew behind this modern Minnesota kitchen remodel learned, there are so many options beyond your basic, 90-degree corners.

Rigid Corner Bead and Archway for outside corners

For their corners, out of all the corner-bead options Trim-Tex offers, the Minnesota crew chose our Rigid Corner Bead for all its edges, and its archway variety for the curved wall serving as the kitchen’s entryway. Why? Its sharp nose provides a sleek edge for a subtly modern look, and its low profile means it requires less mud to finish. Plus, like other beads made from vinyl materials, it won’t rust and won’t dent, even after extreme impact.

Adjustable Inside Corner Bead for a tray ceiling

On the ceiling of this kitchen remodel, there’s a simple tray design that required a tougher solution than paper tape along its inside corners. For this, they decided to use our Adjustable Inside Corner Bead due to its easy installation and clean lines. You can easily shape this bead to conform to a wide range of inside-corner angles.

“You'll notice one of the things that they've done here [on the Adjustable Inside Corner Bead] is they've got this raised edge lip,” says Michael Anschel, host of “Building Resilience” and founder of OA Design + Build + Architecture in Minneapolis, Minn. “And that lip means that I can set my drywall knife right in there without fear of ripping the paper as I lay my bead. And my mud is going to be the thickness of that lip, which is then going to get painted. So, I can have a really crisp, clean corner without worrying about ripping that paper tape. That's a pretty cool solution!”

Truss Backing Angle for a crack-free finish

In a climate like Minnesota, where winters can be brutal, cold weather can cause a phenomenon called “truss uplift,” which can leave unsightly cracks where your walls meet your ceilings. To keep the finish in this home looking great for years to come, the crew here installed Trim-Tex’s Truss Backing Angle bead running along the ceiling joints, which will prevent these cracks from ever happening in the first place.

“What we do when we install the drywall is we install the lid to [Truss Backing Angle] rather than to the truss itself,” says Anschel. “And the first screw is actually like 18 inches out in the field. And so, what that means is, I have a floating corner. So as the trusses move, if I've got big spans, this is going to keep that corner from cracking. Everybody hates warranty work, and that's one way that you make sure that your product stays looking good.”
