Super Seal-X is a fire rated spin on a classic, Trim-Tex’s popular Super Seal Tear Away L Bead. This new bead takes everything drywall finishers love about Super Seal — the top-quality vinyl mud leg that holds up for the long haul, the flexible bubble gasket that keeps the area flexible and crack-free, the tear-off strip that leaves behind the cleanest finished edge you can get — and simply adds cutting-edge intumescent tape to its outer flange. In the event of a fire, this intumescent tape expands to 30 times its size, further compressing the gasket and choking off the spread of fire and smoke.

Fire caulks, the old way of firestopping around windows, have several critical disadvantages (as anyone who’s ever used them knows). For one, it can be tricky to get the dosage right — too little caulk and you won’t pass inspection, too much and you’ve made a major mess all over the window. Second, they’re known to harden over time, and hardening means inflexibility; temperatures on either side of a window can differ wildly, causing movement. Hardened fire caulk means this movement will cause cracks; those cracks are ugly at best and a fire hazard at worst. Super Seal-X overcomes both these hurdles, as its intumescent tape takes the guesswork out of the firestopping process, and the flexible gasket is engineered to remain flexible for the life of the wall/window assembly.

There are actually many potential uses for Super Seal-X beyond windows, from head-of-wall joints butting up against concrete slabs to walls adjoining other walls. It’s massively versatile; the bead’s flexible bubble gasket means it can form a perfect seal against a variety of substrates, including jagged or uneven ones. But many recent building code requirements have cropped up specifying firestop materials on window mullions. Super Seal-X makes it fast and easy to seal off these windows and window mullions from the spread of fire, smoke and sound — and leave behind a lovely finished drywall detail while you’re at it.

Another element of Super Seal-X’s versatility is in its color options: as you can see in these photos, this bead is available in two colors, pink and black. The pink color, like the rest of our line of firestopping beads, is designed to make the inspection process smoother — the code inspector can identify it as a fire rated detail right away, and rest assured that the proper dosage of firestop materials have been applied (unlike caulks and sprays, which are prone to user error). Meanwhile, the black is an aesthetically subtler look, for those who don’t want to see the edges of a white gasket running along their widow.
