Comparing Rolled Corner Bead Options

Let’s start with the basics: why should you use a rolled corner bead? It’s stronger and thicker than paper tape, and that added strength is going to be a lifesaver in many areas, especially long off-angle runs like the kind you’ll find on cathedral ceilings. And then, for outside corners, the biggest advantages are going to come down to flexibility and portability — you can fold the rolled solution to fit whatever corner you’re working with, and one box is going to be a lot easier to carry around than a box of 10-foot corner beads. But once you decide to use a rolled corner bead, how do you know which one to pick out of the many options out there? Let’s dig into comparing rolled corner bead options, and show how Trim-Tex’s Fast Edge® Rolls stand out from the crowd.

Of course, you already know how much we love our Fast Edge Rolls, so we’ll let someone else take you through the options on the market — in this video from the Build Show Network, pro drywall finisher Lydia Crowder (aka Drywall Shorty) takes you through the three most popular rolled corner beads on the market and explains their similarities and key differences:

Comparing Rolled Corner Bead Options: The Fast Edge Difference

The first thing that sets Fast Edge Rolls apart is the selection of widths. Fast Edge Rolls come in four different widths to tackle any project: 2.75”, 3.25”, 3.75” and 4.5”. The other thing you’ll notice right off the bat are the dashed lines running along the outside of the bead; these make it easy to keep the corner bead straight on long runs.

But the biggest and most important difference when it comes to Fast Edge Rolls is the bead’s Mud Locks found on its vinyl core. Where other rolled products rely mostly on just the paper covering to bond to the mud, these Mud Locks (featured on the entire Fast Edge family of solutions) function as hooks that dig into your mud for double the bond strength over other options. Many drywall finishers have also told us that the Mud Lock-enabled vinyl core also provides enough rigidity to the flexible rolled corner bead that it won’t fall off and roll into itself while you’re trying to apply it to a long run.

Comparing Rolled Corner Bead Options: The Similarities

When comparing rolled corner bead options, the basic components are more or less the same between all options: a paper covering over a rigid core. The paper flanges adhere to the mud while the core provides protection to the corner. (As described above, the difference with Fast Edge Roll begins when we start talking how much more the vinyl core can do for you beyond the basics.)

To install all of these rolled beads, measure out how much of the bead you need and cut to size with a pair of snips. Apply a bed of all-purpose mud directly to the corner, then push the bead into place. You can use a roller to apply pressure evenly during installation, or if you’re like Lydia, you may prefer to make minor adjustments by hand to ensure a straight corner. Wipe down excess mud with your joint knife and apply a skim coat of mud to the edges of the bead before your final coat if needed.

One thing Lydia points out is that, for areas where multiple rolled corner beads will meet, as in cathedral ceilings, you don’t want your beads to overlap at all. Instead, you’ll need to pick up a pair of snips and miter cut each bead to meet at an intersection. See the photos below for how to accomplish this.
