Build A Drywall Niche

Drywall Niches

Drywall niches are an inexpensive and beautiful way to make make bookcases, home audio cabinets or for displaying collectibles. They can be built to the the centerpiece of a living room, or just to add a little character to a boring hallway.

Building Instructions

Build a box, as shown to the left, out of 3/4" plywood and fasten between the studs as shown. The plywood will make the niche strong and give you a nailing/screwing surface for mounting rails for shelving.
Line the opening with drywall and finish the edges with Trim-Tex corner beads, as shown to the right. Snip the beads as shown and staple. Use Inside Corner for sharp, crisp inside edges. Use any Trim-Tex outside corner to get the look that you want, including Corner Bead, Chamfer Bead, 350 Bull, 3/4" R. Bullose or 1 1/2" R. Bullnose Bead. Mud the niche and you're done. All for a fraction of the cost of a store bought wall unit.
